The benefits of marathon for the healthy of heart

Despite the many benefits, including marathons in strenuous exercise and not everyone is safe to do so. But according to a new study, running a marathon is a good way for middle-aged men to suppress their risk of heart problems.

The researchers found, with the marathon distance of 42.2 miles can reduce the risk of heart disease in 45 men aged 35-65 years. Respondents were participants of a competition run in the Boston Marathon 2013 recreational.

More than half of the male participants had at least one risk of heart disease such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or a family history of heart disease. At the beginning of the study, they evaluated health, as well as at the end of the 18-week exercise program.

Group exercise program includes running, endurance training, exercise tips, and exercise in general. Overall, each of the men ran 19-58 miles per week, depending on the level of training.

After participating in the training program, participants experienced a five percent decrease in bad cholesterol, a four percent decrease in total cholesterol, a 15 percent decrease in triglycerides, and a one percent decrease in body mass index (BMI), which is an estimate of body fat based on height and weight. Peak oxygen consumption, which is a measurement of lung health, decreased four percent.

The results of the study are scheduled to be presented this week at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology in Washington.

"Participants were selected not professional runners so we want to know what changes will happen to them after following a marathon training program. They turned out to be a healthier population than previously expected," said lead study Jodi Zilinski of Massachusetts General Hospital.

Overall, he said, there was improvement in participant size, shape, structure, and function of the heart after exercise following the marathon. So according to him, running a marathon could be one type of exercise routine to improve heart health.

"Even so, before starting marathon training, one needs to consult a doctor to determine whether they are safe to do so or not," said Zilinski
